about

"Dignity & Grit" - a song about my family. My grandmother Margie inspired this song. In her memoirs she wrote about how after her husband, Eugene, died she had to take care of the farm by herself. She would keep telling herself, "We're going to make it, Margie, and we're going to do it with dignity and grit." It's also true that on the west side of the state, there's a cotton farm that was worked by my granddaddy, Arthur, who lost his arm using farm equipment.

lyrics

Well Eugene was a blue jean kinda guy
And Margie was his shot gun shooting wife
From sun up to sun down they worked out on that ground
To give their family a better life

Well Eugene's buried in the ground where he slaved
And Margie's gotta find her own new way
She said I won't let this family down, gonna find a little place in town
And she kept that farm going through the worst of days

Well Dignity & Grit, this family's founding bricks
You won't make me a hypocrite no matter how ya bring me down
Well Dignity & Grit, we'll survive long after you quit
Stand on our feet til we're six feet under the ground

On the other side of the state there's a cotton farm
Where a hay baler took my Grandaddy's arm
But he knew that cotton would harvest, hell or high water he'd try his darndest
And that hook he had for a hand added to his charm.

Well Dignity & Grit, this family's founding bricks
You won't make me a hypocrite no matter how ya bring me down
Well Dignity & Grit, we'll survive long after you quit
Stand on our feet til we're six feet under the ground

Mom and Dad showed their integrity
When faced with their own lives' worst realities
Gotta fight for your life with all that grit in your teeth
When it's time to go on home, you go with dignity

Well Dignity & Grit, this family's founding bricks
You won't make me a hypocrite no matter how ya bring me down
Well Dignity & Grit, we'll survive long after you quit
Stand on our feet til we're six feet under the ground
